My own made up stories I actually believe

My own made up stories I actually believe.
If I could change my story, would it change me?

Sitting around the campfire as a kid was just like time travel.
Stories are magical.
My mind would teleport into the details.
If the bear was chasing us….I felt my heart screaming and my legs running frantically.
If it was the biggest fish on the line…I felt the pull of the whale on my fishing pole.
Stories have a direct effect on our mind…so much that it can simulate the story and we actually feel it happening.

It’s why we love movies!
We can walk amongst the dinosaurs….and not get eaten.
We can go to the bottom of the ocean or way out into space.
It feels like we were there….literally.

Story telling is fun and super entertaining.
Stirring thoughts…evoking emotion.

Story telling is also very natural.

You and I have a past…we have history.
In our history we have experiences and memories we can share…wow, do we have stories we can tell.

Who would ever have thought that our stories in the past….may be combining together to form an ultimate story about ourself.

What?

In your coaching appointments you will be amazed and in awe of the stories people have about themselves.
Some are good.
Some are bad.
Some are really sad.
Some are super inspiring.

It’s true. There’s a story inside of each of us that describes….
Who I am.
What I can do.
What I can’t do.
What is possible for me.
What is impossible for me.

Not only do I have stories in my past….and a story of who I am today….but I also have a prediction story about how my life is going to turn out.

Ok, here’s where this gets out of control.

Yes, you will witness your client unconsciously accepting their past stories travel through them and be placed in front of them. They keep repeating their past….different people…different circumstances…same story.

If the repeating story is good….well then, that would be good.
Unfortunately, it’s the NOT SO GOOD stories from our past that keep repeating.
So your client keeps repeating the same mistakes….same relationship issues….same money problems.
They can’t get out of the story they keep reliving.
Because the story in their head isn’t changing, it’s just repeating.

Ok, so how do you change this?

You write a new story.
Yep, you write the new story you want to live.
I know, sounds wooo-wooo.

“Words are where most change begins.”
Brandon Sanderson

Ok, so this is what I did…
My first story… was such a hack job. I struggled writing how I wanted my life to be…because it just seemed so cheesy and fake feeling… but my life was crap at this time… and I needed to do something to break the chain of misery ... so I wrote my crazy ideas of what I wish my life was like… kind of made my skin crawl.

The picture on the left is my first story I wrote.
Felt so fake.
But, I used it. Got to start somewhere.

I read it out loud every night before going to sleep.
Then I read it out loud every morning before leaving my bedroom.

For the first week…it felt like nothing was happening.
Until, I started to notice me thinking and talking differently.  What?
Week 2 - My choices started to adjust and my attitude was changing.
Week 3 - I was being different….good different.

My life started to change. The written story was affecting me. My surroundings were adjusting… I was being different, my results were being different.  Other people said I was different….WOW!!!

It’s true. Whatever story I have in my head….is what my head is working on building.

The 2nd picture was my next updated version…and then the 3rd…and on…and on….
I started using this “Story” technique over 20 years ago.
I still use it today.
It is simple…doable…and life changing.
If I change the story my mind is pondering on….I change….and then my life changes.

EASY STEPS TO FOLLOW

  1. Get settled with paper and pen or your computer.

  2. Jot down some ideas of what you want the next chapter of your life to look like. (next chapter, not final chapter)

  3. Look through your list….see what would actually be possible to achieve if you added more focused effort + determination. Those are “gold”.  Some of the ideas you wrote may need to be reserved for version 2.0, only because you may need to juice up your mind first with this version 1.0 story.

  4. Ok, now use those ideas that you selected and pull it together into a story.

  5. Write the story as though you have already accomplished or achieved or experienced it. That will feel weird and sound weird reading it out loud, but it’s the best way to write this.  It works.

  6. Remember this is a rough draft.  It doesn’t have to be perfect. You can edit this at any time, even every day if you want to. You are the story teller, you're the boss.

  7. READ IT OUT LOUD EVERY MORNING.

  8. READ IT OUT LOUD EVERY NIGHT.

  9. If you find sentences or words or details that you feel like needs editing, make the edits that day. The more you feel in alignment with the story…the sooner your brain will get to work on building it.

This process works for anyone at any age about anything.

PRO-TIP: Add a touch of faith…and a little bit of hope while you read your story.

Awesome.
Ok, get your story written and help your clients get started, too.
So many good things to learn about coaching.
It’s fun.
