My BEST Group Coaching Program

I shifted gears: My BEST Group Coaching Program

I love 1-on-1 coaching.
The depth, the transformation, the personalized appointments.
After maxing out at 34 clients every 2 weeks I began to explore new ideas.
I wanted to increase my impact…and increase my sales. It dawned on me that I could teach the same topic to multiple people at the same time.

I thought for sure that I would lose the pizazz of personalized coaching. WOW, was I wrong.

I also thought that Group Coaching was a shallow way to coach people.
I had NO IDEA the depth that could happen with groups.
Keep reading and I’ll explain it all to you.

GROUP DYNAMICS

I was used to being the only “teacher” in a 1:1 scenario. But when I structured my first group coaching program and I saw how others would jump in with their bits of advice...HEY, there’s some great wisdom flying around in this room. How do I harness that and point it at the members?

Ok, so this is how I did it.

CONTENT
I had 5 Techniques I taught the members and I would teach 1 per week and rotate that content every 5 weeks. It didn’t get boring, because we would take it another step deeper every time that topic would come back up. If the content challenges them…and is doable…you got yourself a winner. It’s when the challenge is either too tough…or too easy, that you lose people. You want to be in the zone of 60% difficult…40% easy. Some parts are easy…and other parts they have to stretch for. Of course, you decide what fits your audience the best. I’ve tried both ends of the spectrum. You would think that if someone is going to pay a lot for coaching that the difficulty should go up…nope. The 60/40 ratio is not only about them…it’s also about you. Too high of a push can burn you out or cause you to be too reckless. Remember, you're in this for the lifestyle. This coaching is something you want to be able to do for the rest of your life and not have it damage you in any way. This is why I am still coaching 19 years later while so many others have already burnt out.

TUITION (I have 3 different levels of group coaching)
$600 - $4,000 to start for the first 3 months.
$175 - $400 subscription to stay in each month after that.
(less than 1:1 coaching of $15k)
Cancel at any time.
This charged me to do a good job every session so they want more and stay in.

TRAININGS
Using ZOOM, we would meet each week for 2 hours.
Usually a morning time.
I like coaching on Mon, Tues and Wed. and leave Thur and Fri for speaking or fishing.
I’ve tried 8:00am and 6:30am.
I have 3 Groups I coach right now and two of them are at 8 and one at 6:30.
We meet each week.
Each session is recorded and sent to every member afterwards for download.
I share 15-30 minute coaching at the beginning.
Then I have a scheduling link that members can schedule a coaching appointment during the training.
So they pick what day and what time they will have a coaching appointment.
So, during a Group Coaching session, everyone watches me 1:1 coach.
WOW, it goes deep fast.
It’s cool because when they schedule the appointment they also send me their questions ahead of time and that way they are prepared for the conversation.
I used to do Open Q&A and it would get messy…and random…and off track.
This type of structure keeps everyone on track and very relevant topics because they know the rest of the membership is listening.

THE CHAT
The “Chat” lights up and is super active during each of the coaching sessions.
Some call it the “hot seat”.
Call it whatever…I know it really works.
Those who want 1:1 get it…and those who just want to watch and learn, can.
Everyone gets what type of learning they function best at. T
hen during the “chat” time, they are helping each other…answering each other's questions…asking questions…and the rest of them chime in and talk through it. I will jump in once in a while, but mostly I am focused on the member who booked their appointment.

REPORTING
I think this is a vital part.
There is a personality type that wants tight accountability.
So I ask for an accounting for the week's actions.
I outline what they will be working on each week…and what they will update me on at the end of each week.
I don’t bust them if they don’t send it in.
These are adults, if they don’t want to report, they won’t.
They would have to pay me a lot more to chase them down.
But those who love to report…they love typing up the weekly updates and sending them to me.
They tell me all the time how much it helps them see their progress.

So this is a sample of what I have them send me…

  1. What was your focus for the week?

  2. What % of that focus did you accomplish?

  3. What’s working?

  4. What’s not working?

  5. What can you adjust for next week?

  6. If we had time to do a 1:1, how can I support you?

  7. Tell me 3 success stories for the week.

  8. Include pictures of your daily routine

TEAMS
I have been running group coaching programs for 12 years.
For certain programs I would organize teams. 7 people on each team.
That team would do a team call 4 days a week.
It would be a 30 minute call that would follow a specific agenda.
On the other week day we would hold our 2 hour Strategy session.
At one point I had 4 groups of 60 people in each group.
It was nuts.
The teams were powerful.
Accountability.
Support.
Friendships.
Problem solving.
It was awesome.
I don’t currently do that.
But if you have the energy to run it this way, WOW!
This worked best when the program was a 12 week program.
Everyone would have the same team for all 12 weeks.
70-80% of the teams would stay strong.
The rest would just fall apart…and those who were still dedicated would get absorbed by other teams.
So it takes organization.
The coolest part was the daily support.

START
If you haven’t coached a group yet, put your ideas together how you would like to structure it.
You will drastically improve your income…and your impact.

Here’s some choices / decisions you’ll need to make.

  • Set number of weeks? Or, an ongoing program that they can join at any time?

  • Length of time for each training?

  • What day of the week?

  • What time of day?

  • What platform?

  • Will there be reporting?

  • How will they ask you questions?

  • What content will they learn from you?

  • Will there be teams?

  • Will there be a recording to watch after the live session?

  • Tuition?

  • Couples price?

  • Subscription?

Group Coaching will expand your coaching skills.
It has its own dynamics to it.

The #1 piece of wisdom I have for you is…to love them.
The more you love the people you work with…the more real you will be.
It’s what clients hope for…they hope the coach they have will be genuine, real…relatable.
They really are looking for help.

They have tried to solve their problems themselves for years…and years…
Now they have finally surrendered to the fact that they need help.
It’s a tender moment when someone surrenders…

They listen to every word you say….every idea you share…
They try to take notes…they try to write down the directions you give them.
Then when they are alone….reading the notes, they try the thing you taught them.
They hope it will work for them.
They try to push away the doubt…
They try again…they make a bunch of mistakes trying to learn what comes natural to you.

Care enough about them that you are considerate of their struggles to learn…and apply.
Help them.
Give them space to ask their crazy questions…because to them, it was already hard enough to get up the guts to ask the question. They already feel awkward speaking up.

Love them. Believe in them. They will feel it.

Maybe…the only thing they get from you is the feeling that you believe in them…and that’s all they really needed.
