6 degrees between you and success

and how I ended up coaching an NBA player, a singer, and speaking with an Olympic gold medalist

“Gurus” everywhere these days are shouting from the rooftops:

The ONLY way to grow your coaching business is Facebook ads!

YouTube ads!

TikTok ads!

And they couldn’t be more wrong.

Sure, real coaches are legitimately getting new clients from all those channels.

But the coaching industry existed for decades, LONG before social media ads.

Before social media even existed, in fact.

So how did people do it back then?

Well I know, cause that’s when I started!

And I could tell you all kinds of technical or strategic things I did…

…but honestly, I didn’t really know what I was doing at the time.

All I knew was that what I taught could help people.

So I needed to meet more people.

That was it.

How could I meet more new people on a regular basis?

How could I 2x, 10x, 100x or 1000x the number of people I knew?

I just thought if more people just came to know, like, and trust me… I knew a portion of them would buy coaching from me.

So you’d understand my surprise when that seemingly kindergarten level plan turned into:

  • mentoring a world famous performer,

  • speaking on stage with an Olympic gold medalist,

  • training an NBA player and his team,

  • and being asked to analyze the body language of presidential candidates on ABC news (twice!)

You’ve probably heard of the “6 degrees of separation”.

It’s the concept that everyone in the world is connected through an average of 6 people.

For example, It seems like there’s no way on Earth I’d have any social connections with the Queen of England. (before she passed, of course)

Except that I’ve had multiple private conversations with Brendon Burchard, who has met multiple US presidents, who spent time with the Queen of England.

So I’m actually only 2 degrees of separation from the Queen of England. Crazy!

The point is not that you need to be connected to royalty, or actors, or athletes, or Fortune 500 CEOs.

All that matters is getting connected to the people who need YOUR coaching.

So let’s say you want to coach people on their relationship with food.

Maybe you don’t know anyone in a place of influence to introduce you to large groups of people looking for that kind of coaching.

But maybe a friend of a friend owns the largest gym in town, and you don’t even know that connection exists.

Maybe they’re looking right now for someone to offer coaching at their gym on this subject!

But unless you get out of your comfort zone and proactively meet new people, you could completely miss this opportunity.

And I guess that’s the challenge - you don’t know what you don’t know!

But what I DO know is that you are more closely connected to highly influential people than you can possibly imagine.

Like when my one irritating client turned into 5,000 new clients.

And there’s really nothing standing between you and meeting them other than your own willingness to talk to people and be genuinely helpful.

If people sense you’re a “taker” and are only building relationships for personal gain, they’ll notice and it won’t go over well.

But if you sincerely show up with a desire to love, help, and support others - doors will start flying open for you more than ever before.

Marketing doesn’t have to be a big hairy monster.

It’s just about people.

And what you put out in the world, comes back multiplied.

So meet a lot of new people, help them, and watch as that goodness comes back 10x bigger.

You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.
